Please note that we now accept submissions only during the months of January, April, July, and October.

We want to be your last resort. Please get your piece rejected elsewhere at least once before you submit to us. You don’t need to send us proof, unless you really want to.

We try to respond within 12 weeks, hopefully much sooner. If you haven’t heard from us after that time, feel free to follow up by messaging us in Submittable.

We are committed to providing feedback to those who want it. If you want feedback, please email us at unfortunatelylitmag [at] gmail [dot] com after we decline your piece to request comments. We will do our best to provide you with feedback within 12 weeks. (Note: We are on hiatus from offering feedback until we catch up on existing requests. If you already requested feedback from us, we are still working on responding and appreciate your patience.)

If we accept your work, here’s what you can expect!

  • We're cool with simultaneous submissions (i.e., sending us the same piece you’re sending to other publications at the same time). If your work gets accepted somewhere else (yay!), please withdraw it in Submittable immediately.

  • Original work only. Plagiarism isn’t sexy. Also, no fanfiction or fan art. You gotta own your universe.

  • Don’t send previously published work for text submissions. Image submissions can be previously published, but you must hold all rights to the work.

  • Text translations are awesome. Just follow the guidelines for the applicable genre and include the original piece with your translation. If we accept your work, you must be able to provide proof that you have permission to publish the translation from the copyright holder.

  • We’re not gonna publish work that promotes racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sanism, xenophobia, or any form of asshole behavior against any group of people. So, don’t try to pull that shit.

  • We encourage diversity, but if you’re from a marginalized group, please don’t feel like you have to write about the experience of being marginalized. We want to see whatever you’ve got.

We accept submissions through Submittable during the months of January, April, July, and October.
