an egg cracks                                                                                                                 as the fire
crackles                                                                                                                                        on

the eggshell                                      parts away
left and right
releasing
a
stretching
thread
of
glair
and
yolk

the yolk plops
atop the layer of egg white
that is sizzling, sizzling, sizzling
against the nicely oiled flat hot surface


and when
the sunny side up
is served, into the
bin the egg shells
go

Why we chose this piece: We love how Cailin plays with form to reflect her content. This poem is deceptively simple and made to be savored. The “and” getting thrown into the bin at the end is so satisfying. The understated humor works really nicely.
