I’m a house bursting with neon
flames. I just wanted to see
the gasoline spill into pools of chrome.
But the flick hiss of the lighter
sounded like wings unfolding.

Why we chose this piece: Holy crap, the imagery and the word choice and the line breaks! The language is tight and visceral. Writers usually banish just as a dirty filter word, but this is an example of how it can work well; in this context, there’s determination and desperation in its usage. This poem coalesces into something dangerous, beautiful, and exhilarating.
